In 1910, visiting French civil engineer Francois Duval died in his chair and was found by his landlady, Mrs. Costello had a daughter while living at this address. Vidal) was trying to sell resurrection plants for 15 cents. Vidal, “a man with family in great need,” posted several desperate ads in the Seattle Times (then the Seattle Daily Times) looking for work with 1114 Howell as his listed address. Sitting at the foot of Capitol Hill, just a hair into the Cascade neighborhood, it’s a rectangular, reinforced-masonry structure-that probably does, appropriately, contain rebar-and has always been a bar or restaurant, replacing Pete’s Coffee Shop, an unassuming lunch counter that stood at Boren and Howell in the 1920s.Ī boarding house also used to occupy this spot. It was built in 1930, so certainly, it’s old, but it’s single-story and not constructed particularly interestingly or well. The building itself, located at 1114 Howell, is sort of an anomaly in that’s it’s historic in a way, not. In addition to being the venue Nirvana picked for their Nevermind release party-wherein the band got kicked out of their own show after sneaking a handle of Jack Daniel’s and then starting a cake fight-Re-Bar is home to the longest-running weekly house nights on the West Coast: the two-and-a-half-decade-old Seattle Poetry Slam, the birthplace of drag comedienne Dina Martina, as well as a safe space for generations of LGBTQ+ performers and patrons alike. If you want help ask us gurls(girls) we would love to make suggestions, put out a questionaire on a dead Friday or Saturday night.įirst suggestions: Get a DJ for every Friday and Saturday night, you can't go wrong and update, update.Re-Bar certainly one of the city’s most historic extant nightclubs. The Rose has so much potential and could be a blast and a very cool place to hang out, but I guess we will be going to the guys bars to dance and have a good time. We were always treated kindly at Traxx and I miss it already. No one talks to anyone unless they know each other from some where else. A couple of weeks ago my love and I went to the Rose on a Friday night because I guess Traxx is out of buisness, so we drove to the Rose with a friend and the entertainment was a few girls playing pool and a tacky juke box.

My girl and I were going to Traxx in Kent because every Friday and Saturday or special ocassion there was a DJ and dancing. Hey, we girls want to dance and have fun with our special girl or meet our special girl, whatever the case may be. I just looked at the calendar for March 07 and there is only one DJ night. Where is the dj? – The best things about the Rose is that it is where I met the love of my life, and the bartenders are great. but like I said, because it is the only lesbian bar, and if your single, it is the place to be! I have to admit if you get used to the bad service and the ugly tavern like feel, and really get to know the people who go there, because it is the only lesbian bar, you will actually have some fun, but as far as a review for the bar itself, the bathroom is so small a toddler would feel cramped in the stalls, you cant even find the tiny lil sink to wash your hands, and the locks have been broken on the stalls for years! If your a femme, put your makeup on at home, and dont plan on getting to the mirror all night without being beat up by the door! If your a regular dont expect to have them treat you like family, in fact the longer you go there and spend your money the less service you will get over time, youll be lucky to actually get a drink on a Saturday night. the place is packed every weekend, but the owners dont spend any money to make it nice for the girls. it smells, the furniture is old, and as far as trendy or chic, you would think it was a mens leather hook up bar rather than the only lesbian bar in town. Wheres the service, just an over hyped tavern – it is like awalking into a seedy tavern on skid road.
